Saturday, 11:55am: The majority of Event 4 is a back-and-forth battle between overall leader Jeff Adler 🇨🇦 and Rickey Garard 🇦🇺. Ricky overtakes Jeff during the log muscle-ups; Jeff closes the gap during the subsequent thrusters. With one minute to go, Adler trails by just 50 meters. The crowd is here for it, clapping and cheering and stomping their feet. 

Everybody is so focused on the race between Ricky and Jeff, no one notices Dallin Pepper 🇺🇸 inching up the on-screen leaderboard. He’s rowing the last 1,000 meters with more heart than legs, pulling 1:37 in an all-out attempt to chase down the leaders. And he does. To the astonishment of the crowd, it’s Dallin, not Jeff, who follows Ricky off the rower. He lumbers to the finish on shaky legs, looking as surprised by this turn of events as the fans, and crosses the line two milliseconds ahead of Jeff, edging him out for second place.

“Fuck you,” Jeff says. Dallin smiles, accepting the complement.
